Z-Tyr-ONp is a synthetic, water soluble, non-toxic fibrinogen activator. It has been shown to be effective at low concentrations in the activation of fibrinogen and in the prevention of clotting. Z-Tyr-ONp hydrolyzes fibrinogen to form fibrin clots, which are needed for blood coagulation. This process is mediated by the enzyme alpha-thrombin and is dependent on calcium ions. Z-Tyr-ONp also exhibits surfactant properties that allow it to stabilize micelles that contain lipase enzymes and bile salts, which are required for digestion of dietary fats. The presence of lipase enzymes can enhance the proteolytic activity of Z-Tyr-ONp and increase its ability to dissolve clots.
