Produktinformation
2-(2-Methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethan-1-ol is a chemical compound that is used as a feedstock for styrene, which is an important raw material in the production of plastics. It can be produced by the oxidation of 2-methoxybenzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate, followed by acidification to remove the manganese dioxide. The product can be purified by distillation or crystallization. The reaction proceeds through a series of steps: oxidation, hydration, hydrolysis, dehydration, and dehydrogenation.
The chemical is soluble in methanol and has high activity for cleavage of bonds with electron withdrawing substituents. It also has low yield because of the use of expensive starting materials and the need for multiple steps to produce it.
