2,3,4,5,6-Pentachlorobiphenyl is a complex compound that belongs to the group of polychlorinated biphenyls. It has been shown to induce autoimmune diseases in mice and rats by activating the immune system. The enzyme activity increases when 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorobiphenyl binds to the ryanodine receptor (RYR) and induces an increase in intracellular calcium levels. This leads to increased production of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). In vitro assays have demonstrated that 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorobiphenyl also has effects on bacterial strains.
