Methabenzthiazuron is a herbicide that is used to control weeds in agricultural areas. It inhibits the production of prostaglandins (PGE2) by binding to the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to PGE2. Methabenzthiazuron does not inhibit photosynthesis and has no effect on light-dependent chlorophyll fluorescence. This drug has been shown to have a sublethal effect on plants, leading to inhibition of bacterial growth at low concentrations without affecting plant growth. This herbicide can be used as a model system for studying the effects of matrix effects on plant cells.
