Warfarin is a coumarin-type anticoagulant that inhibits the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, which are necessary for blood coagulation. It is also used as an anticancer agent in animals and humans. Warfarin inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, including CYP2C9, CYP2C19, and CYP3A4. This inhibition may lead to drug interactions with other drugs metabolized by these enzymes. Warfarin has been shown to have anticancer effects in both cell culture and animal models. The anticancer effect of warfarin is due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and RNA.
