Propylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate is a lipid nanoparticle that consists of a solid lipid core and a surface coating of polymers. It has potential use as a dietary supplement, since it can be used to enhance the bioavailability of some drugs, such as vitamins, minerals, and nutraceuticals. Propylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate is also being studied for its ability to deliver superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) to tumor cells. SPIONs are magnetic nanoparticles that can be used in cancer therapy because they can be targeted to tumor cells by using an external magnetic field. The nanoparticles are attracted to the tumor site due to their high permeability and retention properties. This allows for an enhanced therapeutic effect with reduced systemic exposure.
