1-Methyl-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic Acid (1MDCA) is an unidentified compound that has been shown to damage DNA. It reacts with chloride ions and protonated amides to form covalent bonds with nucleobases, causing lesions in DNA. 1MDCA has not been fully characterized but it is thought to be a mononuclear molecule due to its mass spectrometric profile. The mechanism of the reaction was determined through the use of metal ion complexes and intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
