Tetrarhodium dodecacarbonyl is an ethylene diamine complex of tetrarhodium, which is a metal carbonyl. Tetrarhodium dodecacarbonyl can be used as a catalyst for the production of monocarboxylic acids from hydroxy methyl compounds. The reaction mechanism is nucleophilic attack by the hydroxyl group on the rhodium atom in the dicarbonyl complex. This type of catalytic activity has been observed using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and it is known to produce two different reaction products.
