Hastacine is a reference material that is a natural product. It is extracted from the plant Hasta, which belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It contains two main metabolites, hastacin and hastalactone. The former is used as a reference material in analytical chemistry and the latter has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects.
Hastaquin has also been found to be an effective inhibitor of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells, including human lymphocytes and rat liver cells. This inhibition was due to hastaquin's ability to bind to ribosomes through its structure, which resembles that of tRNA synthetase.
