It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme activities of phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which are involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Tormentil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in animal models, as well as being able to reverse cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity. 23-Hydroxytormentic acid has also been shown to be an antinociceptive agent in rats, with no effect on locomotor activity or muscle coordination. This compound has also been reported as having potential therapeutic properties for inflammatory diseases and diabetes.
