Ipsapirone is a psychotropic agent belonging to the class of pharmacological agents. It has been shown to have agonistic activity at 5-HT2 receptors and antagonistic activity at 5-HT1A receptors. Ipsapirone has also been found to have low potency in vivo, which makes it unsuitable as an experimental model for other drugs that act on these receptors. Ipsapirone has been shown to increase locomotor activity in animals and may be useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The effects of ipsapirone on the hippocampal formation are similar to that of buspirone, a drug that is used for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.
