Setmelanotide is a peptide drug that activates the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and may be effective in treating obesity. Setmelanotide is a cyclic peptide with a covalently attached sugar moiety. It has been shown to have an effect on locomotor activity and long-term efficacy in animal models of obesity, as well as on energy metabolism, physiological effects, pharmacokinetic properties, and deficiency states. Setmelanotide has not been found to have any toxicity studies in animals or humans. However, it does have potential for being a drug target for hepatic steatosis and pharmacological treatment of obesity.
