2-(((4-Chlorophenyl)sulfonyl)methyl)-1,4-difluorobenzene is a sulfone that undergoes transformation in the presence of hydrazine and hydrochloric acid to form a sulfonyl chloride. This compound can be used to synthesize 2-(((4-chlorophenyl)sulfonyl)methyl)-1,4-difluorobenzene as well as other sulfones. It can also be used to synthesize sulfonyls through the reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with sodium sulfite and sulfur dioxide. The synthesis is conducted in two steps: first, an arylalkyl is added to the carbonyl group on the sulfur dioxide molecule.
