Nitrefazole belongs to the group of isoenzyme inhibitors that are used to treat hyperlipidemia. It inhibits the synthesis and release of fatty acids by blocking the enzyme, acyl-CoA synthase. Nitrefazole can be administered orally, intravenously or intraarterially and has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis in human liver cells. The drug has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cholesterol synthesis in humans and is used clinically for this purpose. Nitrefazole is a molecule with a profile similar to other drugs in its class, such as lovastatin, which blocks the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase.
