Ramelteon is a sedative-hypnotic drug that binds to MT2 melatonin receptors. It has been shown to have agonist activity in vitro and in vivo, with an efficacy range of 10-100 nM. Ramelteon Metabolite M-II (RMMII) is formed from the hydroxy group of ramelteon, which is necessary for the formation of RMMII. The pharmacokinetics of RMMII are similar to that of ramelteon and its metabolites. RMMII has been found to be resistant to metabolism by esterases and glutathione reductase, which may contribute to its long half life.
