Beschreibung

6-(Hydroxymethyl)uracil (6-HMAU) is a prodrug that is metabolized to uracil, an important pyrimidine nucleoside. 6-HMAU is activated by copper oxide in the presence of chloride to form the corresponding pyrimidine nucleotide. It has been shown to be effective against cryptococcus neoformans in an animal model, as well as cancer cells in vitro. 6-HMAU is also metabolized by subtilis and can be used for supportive care when used with other antibiotics. This prodrug can be used with orotic acid or thionyl chloride as a selective agent against bacteria such as Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli, respectively. 6-HMAU has been shown to inhibit the growth of some fungi and insects, including pesticide-resistant strains of mosquitoes.
