It reacts with chloride ions to form 4-methyl-1-(chloromethyl)octyne, which can be converted into prostaglandin by ozonolysis. The reaction also forms dimethylformamide and zinc chloride as byproducts. This product can be used as a coupling reagent in the synthesis of cyclopentenones and hydrocarbons.
