Coumestrol-9-methyl ether is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of ptychopetalols. It is an anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer agent that exhibits cytotoxic effects on human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). Coumestrol-9-methyl ether also has antioxidant properties, which are due to its ability to scavenge free radicals, such as superoxide anions. This compound also inhibits the biosynthesis of phytoalexins in plants by interfering with the activity of enzymes involved in phenylalanine metabolism. Coumestrol-9-methyl ether has been shown to be a dietary phytoalexin found in Ptychopetalum olacoides and Borsonia nitride.
