Beschreibung

Fucoxanthine is a natural compound that belongs to the group of xanthophylls, which are natural pigments found in plants. It has been shown to have bioactivities, such as antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Fucoxanthine can be used as a sunscreen additive, which prevents UV-induced damage to human skin cells by absorbing UV radiation. It also has organoleptic properties, such as a pleasant odor and color. The sunscreens containing fucoxanthine are marketed under the trade name Zephirium. Fucoxanthine is also used in marine macroalgae extracts for the treatment of diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The extract may modulate inflammation by inhibiting phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) activity and preventing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathways from activating microglia in the retina.
