Glyceollin III is a plant-derived antimicrobial agent that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cancer. It is also a phytoalexin, which are compounds produced by plants in response to stress. Glyceollin III inhibits the biosynthesis of fatty acids and lipids, which may be due to its ability to react with lipid peroxides. This compound also has an insulin-sensitizing effect and can be used as a health supplement. In addition, glyceollin III has been shown to inhibit the growth of phytopathogenic fungi such as Phytophthora megasperma and Lipomyces starkeyi and can be administered orally for these purposes. The main ingredient in glyceollin III is galacturonic acid, which is converted from glucose by the enzyme polygalacturonase.
