Dextran sulfate sodium is a complex carbohydrate that consists of a linear chain of many glucose molecules. It is often used as a gel to protect the bowel during radiation therapy and in the treatment of severe burns. Dextran sulfate sodium can be modified with methylation, click modification, fluorination, saccharide, or glycosylation. Dextran sulfate sodium also has many applications in biochemistry and medicine such as being used as an osmotic agent in cell culture media, after being glycosylated it can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease.
