This gene encodes an enzyme that hydrolyzes the terminal alpha-L-iduronic acid residues of two glycosaminoglycans, dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate. This hydrolysis is required for the lysosomal degradation of these glycosaminoglycans. Mutations in this gene that result in enzymatic deficiency lead to the autosomal recessive disease mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I). [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008],

The protein encoded by this gene hydrolyzes cerebroside sulfate to cerebroside and sulfate. Defects in this gene lead to metachromatic leucodystrophy (MLD), a progressive demyelination disease which results in a variety of neurological symptoms and ultimately death. Dietary supplementation of aloe components (aloin, aloesin and aloe-gel) can ameliorate intestinal inflammatory responses in a 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis rat model, in particular, aloesin is the most potent inhibitor. <p>Vinblastine sulfate, 96%, is a chemotherapeutic agent, which is a semi-synthetic derivative of natural alkaloids extracted from the Madagascar periwinkle plant, Catharanthus roseus. This compound functions through the disruption of microtubule formation by binding to tubulin, effectively inhibiting mitosis. By preventing the assembly of microtubules, vinblastine sulfate interferes with the metaphase stage of cell division, leading to cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis of rapidly dividing cancer cells.</p>

<p>2-Amino-3-nitrobenzoic acid (2ABN) is a peroxide that is used as an antiviral. 2ABN has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species in cancer cells, leading to apoptosis. It also inhibits the growth of carcinoma cell lines and tissues. 2ABN reacts with chloral hydrate to form a particle that can be encapsulated for delivery and release in vivo. This drug has been expressed in Escherichia coli, which may lead to improved stability and ease of production. 2ABN is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandins. <p>Atropine sulfate monohydrate is a tropane alkaloid derivative, which is primarily sourced from plants of the Solanaceae family, such as Atropa belladonna. This compound functions by competitively inhibiting the action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors, thereby exerting anticholinergic effects. By blocking these receptors, atropine sulfate monohydrate impedes parasympathetic nervous system activity, which can lead to increased heart rate, pupil dilation, and reduced glandular secretions.</p>

<p>N,N'-Bis-Boc-1-guanylpyrazol is a tetrapeptide that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the production and release of melanocortin and its related peptides, which are important for the regulation of body weight, appetite, and mood. N,N'-Bis-Boc-1-guanylpyrazol binds to sulfate groups on chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans. The inhibition of these sulfated proteoglycans leads to decreased levels of hyaluronic acid and a lack of water retention in the joints. This can cause symptoms such as pain and stiffness in joints, particularly those affected by osteoarthritis.</p>
