N-(Hydroxymethyl)phthalimide is stable in basic solutions and hydrolyzes in acidic environments. It is also soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, methylene chloride, and dimethyl sulfoxide. N-(Hydroxymethyl)phthalimide's antiinflammatory activity may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting amine oxidase.
