    Ethylene-bis-maleimide is a cross-linking agent that can be used to create a thermo-expansive polymer. It is also a chemical reagent that can be used as an initiator for the polymerization of unsaturated fatty acids. Ethylene-bis-maleimide has been shown to interact with proteins, forming covalent bonds between them and altering their function. This compound is able to form disulfide bonds with cysteine residues in proteins, which may cause hydrolysis of the protein by proteolytic enzymes. Ethylene-bis-maleimide forms a molecule with calcium stearate, which leads to its use in membrane transporters and cationic polymerization. Ethylene-bis-maleimide has been shown to have a morphology of spherical droplets or fibres when dissolved in chloroform and left standing for several days.
