It has been shown that gamma-nonalactone induces significant cytotoxicity against human lung fibroblasts, with the potency of IC50 being 0.22 μM. Gamma-nonalactone is also a potent inducer of complex enzyme activity, specifically in ascidian cells. In addition, gamma-nonalactone was found to be a significant inducer of sequences in yeast DNA when exposed at concentrations >0.5 mM.
