6,7-Dihydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridine is a synthetic compound which has been used as a starting material in the synthesis of clopidogrel. 6,7-Dihydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridine has been shown to be an inhibitor of platelet aggregation. It is also a bifunctional compound that can act as either an acid or base catalyst. This property has led to its use in organic chemistry as a means of converting nitro groups into amines. The synthesis pathway for 6,7-dihydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridine begins with 5-azaindole and ends with the desired product after two steps: hydrogen sulfate reduction and hydrolysis.
