(S)-1-Methyl-2-oxoimidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid is a metabolite of the neurotoxic organophosphate pesticide, chlorpyrifos. It has been detected in humans and animals following environmental exposure to chlorpyrifos. (S)-1-Methyl-2-oxoimidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid is in vitro validated as an etiological agent for neurodegenerative diseases and can be quantified by mass spectrometry methods. This compound is also a dietary component that has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of choline acetyltransferase, an enzyme involved in acetylcholine production, which can lead to cognitive impairment. The biological effects of this compound are due to its ability to act as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme choline acetyltransferase, which catalyzes the conversion of choline into acetylcholinesterase.
