Tetraetilenglicol, también conocido como TEG, es un líquido incoloro, inodoro y higroscópico que pertenece a la clase de los glicoles de polietileno. Se caracteriza por su alto peso molecular y se utiliza comúnmente como disolvente, plastificante y en la formulación de varios productos químicos. Tetraetilenglicol tiene un punto de ebullición relativamente alto y baja volatilidad, lo que lo hace adecuado para aplicaciones que requieren estabilidad térmica. Exhibe buena solubilidad en agua y muchos disolventes orgánicos, lo que mejora su utilidad en varios procesos industriales. Además, TEG tiene un perfil de baja toxicidad, lo que lo hace más seguro para su uso en productos de consumo en comparación con otros glicoles. Su estructura química presenta múltiples enlaces éter, lo que contribuye a su naturaleza hidrofílica y capacidad para formar enlaces de hidrógeno.
