Azul de bromofenol es un colorante sintético comúnmente utilizado como indicador de pH en diversas aplicaciones bioquímicas. Aparece como un polvo azul oscuro o púrpura y es soluble en agua, exhibiendo un cambio de color de amarillo en niveles de pH ácidos a azul en condiciones alcalinas, típicamente alrededor de pH 3.0 a 4.6. Esta propiedad lo hace valioso en entornos de laboratorio, particularmente en electroforesis en gel, donde ayuda a visualizar el progreso de la separación de ADN o proteínas. El compuesto tiene una fórmula molecular de C19H10Br4O5S y presenta un grupo ácido sulfónico, que mejora su solubilidad en soluciones acuosas. Azul de bromofenol también se utiliza en diversos procedimientos de tinción y como un colorante de seguimiento en ensayos bioquímicos.
