Pleuromutilina es un antibiótico natural derivado del hongo *Pleurotus mutilus*. Pertenece a la clase de compuestos conocidos como Pleuromutilinas, que se caracterizan por su estructura única que incluye un sistema de anillo tetracíclico. Este antibiótico exhibe actividad de amplio espectro contra varias bacterias Gram-positivas y algunas bacterias Gram-negativas, lo que lo hace efectivo en el tratamiento de infecciones causadas por cepas resistentes. Pleuromutilina funciona inhibiendo la síntesis de proteínas bacterianas, dirigiéndose específicamente al centro de transferencia peptidílica del ribosoma, lo que interrumpe el proceso de traducción.
