Descripción:
Hidróxido de sodio, comúnmente conocido como soda cáustica o sosa, es un compuesto inorgánico con la fórmula NaOH. Es un sólido blanco e inodoro que es altamente soluble en agua, produciendo una solución fuertemente alcalina. Hidróxido de sodio es higroscópico, lo que significa que puede absorber humedad del aire, y generalmente se encuentra en forma sólida como pellets, escamas o gránulos. Tiene un alto punto de fusión y es una base fuerte, disociándose fácilmente en agua para liberar iones hidróxido (OH⁻), lo que lo hace efectivo en la neutralización de ácidos. Este compuesto se utiliza ampliamente en diversas industrias, incluyendo la fabricación química, la producción de papel y el tratamiento de agua, así como en productos de limpieza doméstica. Debido a su naturaleza cáustica, Hidróxido de sodio puede causar quemaduras químicas severas y debe ser manejado con cuidado, utilizando el equipo de protección personal adecuado. También es importante señalar que Hidróxido de sodio reacciona de manera exotérmica con el agua, por lo que siempre debe añadirse al agua, no al revés, para evitar salpicaduras y posibles peligros.
