Descripción:
Óxido de platino(IV), con la fórmula química PtO2, es un compuesto inorgánico caracterizado por su apariencia de marrón oscuro a negro. Es un óxido estable de platino, donde el platino exhibe un estado de oxidación +4. Este compuesto se utiliza principalmente como catalizador en diversas reacciones químicas, particularmente en la síntesis orgánica y en la producción de gas hidrógeno. Óxido de platino(IV) también se utiliza en el campo de la electroquímica, especialmente en pilas de combustible y como catalizador en la oxidación de alcoholes. La sustancia es insoluble en agua y exhibe alta estabilidad térmica, lo que la hace adecuada para aplicaciones a alta temperatura. Además, se puede sintetizar a través de la oxidación del metal de platino o por descomposición térmica de ciertas sales de platino. Aunque generalmente se considera que tiene baja toxicidad, el manejo debe hacerse con cuidado debido al potencial de irritación respiratoria y otros problemas de salud asociados con partículas finas. The compound itself shows no cytotoxicity in cells of the pulmonary origin when compared to its PtCl4 counterpart. It has also been used as a catalyst in amperometric biosensors that are based on oxidase enzymes.
