CAS:2,6-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid is a potent inhibitor of the reverse transcriptase enzyme. This drug has been shown to inhibit the replication of influenza virus and hepatitis C virus in animal models. It also inhibits the synthesis of DNA from RNA by binding to the nucleotide substrate as well as to the polymerase enzyme. 2,6-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid has been shown to be effective against viruses in humans but not in animals because it is rapidly metabolized by anions such as chloride ions. This drug is also active against other viruses such as human herpesvirus type 1 (HSV-1). The linker group is important for its activity. 2,6-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid can be used with valacyclovir or acyclovir for treatment of herpesviruses and influenza virus infections in humans.
