Atorvastatina cálcica es un compuesto farmacéutico utilizado principalmente como agente reductor de lípidos para manejar la hiperlipidemia y reducir el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares. Pertenece a la clase de medicamentos conocidos como estatinas, que funcionan inhibiendo la enzima HMG-CoA reductasa, un jugador clave en la biosíntesis de colesterol en el hígado. Esta acción conduce a una disminución del colesterol de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) y triglicéridos, mientras que aumenta los niveles de colesterol de lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL).
