It is an immunogenic agent that inhibits the transport of penicillin-binding proteins in vivo and prevents the synthesis of protein genes. (S)-3-Bromopropane-1,2-diol has been shown to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by binding to penicillin-binding protein, which prevents it from synthesizing proteins needed for cell division.
