Ácido nitrilotriacético (NTA) es un agente quelante con la fórmula química C6H9N3O6. Se caracteriza por su capacidad para formar complejos estables con iones metálicos, lo que lo hace útil en diversas aplicaciones, incluyendo el tratamiento de agua, la agricultura y como componente en detergentes. El NTA es un sólido cristalino incoloro que es soluble en agua y exhibe un comportamiento dependiente del pH, siendo su capacidad quelante más efectiva en condiciones alcalinas. La presencia de tres grupos de ácido carboxílico le permite unirse eficazmente a iones metálicos divalentes y trivalentes, como el calcio, el magnesio y el hierro. El NTA a menudo se considera una alternativa más ecológica a otros agentes quelantes como el EDTA, ya que es biodegradable bajo ciertas condiciones.
