Semustina, también conocido como metil-CCNU, es un agente alquilante sintético utilizado principalmente en el tratamiento de ciertos tipos de cáncer, particularmente tumores cerebrales y linfomas. Pertenece a la clase de las nitrosoureas, que son conocidas por su capacidad para cruzar la barrera hematoencefálica, lo que las hace efectivas para las malignidades del sistema nervioso central. Semustina funciona introduciendo grupos alquilo en el ADN, lo que lleva a la formación de enlaces cruzados y a la posterior interrupción de la replicación y transcripción del ADN, induciendo finalmente la muerte celular. El compuesto se administra típicamente por vía oral y tiene una vida media relativamente larga, lo que permite efectos terapéuticos sostenidos. Los efectos secundarios comunes asociados con Semustina incluyen mielosupresión, trastornos gastrointestinales y potencial hepatotoxicidad.
