This compound forms a disulfide bond with cysteine residues on proteins, which can be cleaved by reducing agents such as dithiothreitol or mercaptoethanol. The thermal expansion of this compound is proportional to the vapor pressure of water over the range from 0-100°C, and it has been shown to have a constant pressure at temperatures below 100°C.
