Folínato de calcio, también conocido como leucovorina o factor citrovorum, es una sal de calcio del ácido folínico, que es un derivado del ácido fólico. Se utiliza comúnmente en aplicaciones médicas, particularmente como un medicamento para reducir los efectos tóxicos de ciertos agentes de quimioterapia, como el metotrexato, al proporcionar una fuente de folato reducido. Este compuesto se caracteriza por su apariencia cristalina de color blanco a amarillo pálido y es soluble en agua, lo que lo hace adecuado para la administración intravenosa u oral. Leucovorin is a folate analog drug that is used to treat the toxic effects of methotrexate and other antagonists of folate. It works by counteracting the toxic effects of methrotrexate by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. It is used to increase the levels of folic acid and by strengthening the link between the active metabolite (5-FdUMP) and the enzyme thymidylate synthetase, leucovorin increases the action of fluorouracil. Additionally, in order to increase survival in patients undergoing palliative treatment for colorectal cancer, it is used in conjunction with 5-fluorouracil.
