BADGE is often found in wastewater treatment plants and has been shown to react with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form benzene and glycidol, which are carcinogenic. BADGE also has been shown to cause mutations in the calf thymus DNA and inhibit the activity of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA.
