CAS:5-Ethynyl nicotine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist that has been shown to produce chronic exposure effects in rats. It binds to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and has been shown to inhibit dopamine release. 5-Ethynyl nicotine also inhibits the binding of acetylcholine to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, with an IC50 of 6.2 μM. This compound has been shown to be a potent molecule for the treatment of schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. 5-Ethynyl nicotine can be synthesized in an asymmetric synthesis process, which produces two enantiomers. The (S)-enantiomer is more potent than the (R)-enantiomer, but both have similar affinity for α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
