4-Metilumbeliferil β-D-glucopiranósido (MUG) es un compuesto sintético comúnmente utilizado como sustrato fluorogénico en ensayos bioquímicos, particularmente para la detección de la actividad de β-glucosidasa. Presenta una porción de 4-metilumbeliferona unida a una unidad de β-D-glucopiranósido, que al ser hidrolizada por β-glucosidasa libera la fluorescente 4-metilumbeliferona, permitiendo una detección sensible. MUG es típicamente un polvo cristalino blanco a blanco sucio, soluble en agua y en disolventes orgánicos como metanol y dimetilsulfóxido. Sus propiedades de fluorescencia lo hacen valioso en diversas aplicaciones, incluidos ensayos enzimáticos, estudios microbiológicos y monitoreo ambiental. El compuesto es estable en condiciones normales de laboratorio, pero debe almacenarse en un lugar fresco y seco, protegido de la luz para evitar la degradación.
