Alpha-D-galactose 1-phosphate, dipotassium salt pentahydrate also inhibits the formation of glycogen and glucose from galactose residues as well as inhibiting the activity of enzymes involved in galactose metabolism. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to decreased galactose levels in diabetic patients.</p>
