THC has been shown to increase serum prolactin levels in humans and animals and interfere with cell nuclei in the brain. Chronic administration of THC may lead to a decrease in dopaminergic neurotransmission, which may be responsible for some of its effects on memory and cognition. Experimental studies have shown that THC impairs the function of mouse papillary muscles, leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure. The pharmacological effects of THC are due both to its agonist activity at cannabinoid receptors and its antagonist activity at opioid receptors.
