It can be prepared by reacting methyl phenol with bromine and hydrochloric acid in the presence of copper. The reaction produces 2,2′,2″-(1,2,2-triethoxyethane)trifluoroacetic acid. This process has been shown to have high yield and to be environmentally friendly because it does not produce chlorinated byproducts. 2-Bromo-3-methylphenol can also be synthesized from methyl phenol and bromine using copper chloride in polyphosphoric acid or hydrogenated trifluoroacetic acid.
