It is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. 1-Acenaphthenone has been shown to be an efficient dioxygenation catalyst for the production of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid from malonic acid. It also has been used as a solid catalyst in the oxidation of fatty acids with hydrogen peroxide and as an enzyme activator for rat liver microsomes. This compound also shows synchronous fluorescence with other compounds such as 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 2-(2'-oxobiphenyl)acetic acid.
