Descripción:
Monensina Sódica es un antibiótico ionóforo de poliether que se utiliza principalmente como aditivo en la alimentación del ganado para mejorar las tasas de crecimiento y la eficiencia alimentaria. Se produce mediante la fermentación de la bacteria *Streptomyces cinnamonensis*. Este compuesto exhibe una estructura compleja caracterizada por un esqueleto de poliether cíclico, que le permite transportar cationes monovalentes, como sodio y potasio, a través de las membranas biológicas. Monensina Sódica es conocido por su capacidad para alterar los gradientes iónicos, lo que lleva a un metabolismo celular alterado en ciertos microorganismos, razón por la cual es efectivo contra varios protozoos y bacterias grampositivas. En medicina veterinaria, se utiliza para prevenir la coccidiosis en aves de corral y para aumentar el aumento de peso en rumiantes. Sin embargo, su uso debe ser cuidadosamente gestionado debido a la posible toxicidad en especies no objetivo y al desarrollo de resistencia en patógenos. Además, se ha estudiado Monensina Sódica por sus posibles aplicaciones en medicina humana, particularmente en la terapia contra el cáncer, debido a su capacidad para inducir apoptosis en ciertas células cancerosas.
