D-Talono-1,4-lactone is a stereoselective drug that inhibits the synthesis of c-glycosides and is used to study the mechanisms of action of these compounds. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-negative pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii. D-Talono-1,4-lactone also has inhibitory activities against gram negative bacteria. This compound may be a potential biomarker for the detection of gram negative bacteria in water samples. The mechanism of action of this drug is not known but it is likely due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth.
