Metopterina, también conocido como 4-amino-4-deoxí-N10-metilpteroylglutámico, es un análogo del folato y un miembro de la clase de compuestos antifolato. Se reconoce principalmente por su papel como inhibidor de la dihidrofolato reductasa, una enzima crítica en la síntesis de ácidos nucleicos. Metopterina se caracteriza por su estructura compleja, que incluye un anillo de pteridina, un grupo de ácido para-aminobenzoico y una cadena lateral de ácido glutámico. Este compuesto se utiliza a menudo en el tratamiento de ciertos cánceres y enfermedades autoinmunes debido a su capacidad para interferir con la proliferación celular. Metopterina es soluble en agua y presenta un peso molecular relativamente bajo.
