Maleato de timolol es un antagonista beta-adrenérgico no selectivo que se utiliza principalmente en el tratamiento del glaucoma y la hipertensión ocular, así como para condiciones sistémicas como la hipertensión y ciertos tipos de enfermedades cardíacas. Es un polvo cristalino blanco a blanco sucio que es soluble en agua y tiene un rango de pH que es típicamente neutro. La sustancia es una sal formada a partir de timolol, un beta-bloqueador, y ácido maleico, que mejora su solubilidad y estabilidad. Maleato de timolol actúa reduciendo la presión intraocular a través de la disminución de la producción de humor acuoso en el ojo. Sus efectos farmacológicos incluyen la reducción de la frecuencia cardíaca y la contractilidad miocárdica, lo que lo hace útil en el manejo de condiciones cardiovasculares. El compuesto generalmente es bien tolerado, aunque puede causar efectos secundarios como fatiga, mareos o problemas respiratorios en algunos pacientes. Debido a sus efectos sistémicos, se aconseja precaución en pacientes con condiciones respiratorias o ciertos trastornos cardiovasculares.
